Chapter 13

We talked late into the night, which meant I woke the next morning to a Tia who was more awake and happy than any time I’d seen her for the last month. She looked like she’d slept for more than a single hour and had both new clothes and redone her ponytail. However, the four hours I’d gotten was less than I was used to, and I stared at my friend, who offered a grin in response.

“I hate you,” I said.

But then, when I thought she could sink no lower, Tia offered me an apple, and I recognized that although it was probably six in the morning, my friend either had a stash of apples somewhere, which was unlikely, or she’d gotten up even earlier and went out to buy this for me. Sighing, I took it and bit into it. “I hate you slightly less,” I amended, and Tia moved to sit beside me on the small bed that took up half the floor space.

The room I was given in Tia’s house was small—very small. I had just enough space for somewhere to sleep and a small bedside table. My clothing collection was stored in boxes under the bed, the area not big enough for the dresser and wardrobe I so sorely wanted.

As I chewed on my apple, Tia leaned back, rolling her head to the sky. “Did you know there are eighteen houses in the sticks watched by the Upper City?” she asked conversationally. I grunted both my acceptance of this and that I had not known this piece of information. Tia’s head came back down, and her grin widened, the brightness a complete contrast to the desolation she’d shown the last few weeks. As glad as I was to see it, not at six in the morning. “Our house is not one of those eighteen.”

I pulled my head up; the shock registering even through my exhaustion. “We’re not?” I asked.

Tia looked back and shook her head.

I looked to the small window that adorned this room, to find that the glass was closed and the bars over the window secure. So long as I spoke quietly, then my words would not carry. “But they took Rockslide from here not five weeks ago.” Then, their other surveillance camera had “broken” within a few hours of it being placed. Even I had expected that there would be a basic level of surveillance. It was why I was very careful when I came home from hero work. Their technopath knew Tia was here… What was Upper City playing at?

The information, while strange, had transformed my friend, and I felt like I was looking at the Tia who had taken on Upper City again, rather than the tiny terrified girl I’d shared a house with these past few weeks. Still, I had to be the voice of reason. “Maybe they know tech wouldn’t work against you, so they have people instead.”

Tia was shaking her head before I finished the statement. She nodded to the left.
